Recent Faculty Hires for 11-12 Academic year

Kelly Johnson, Ph.D. as Director of Clinical Training

Dr. Johnson serves as the Director of Clinical Training in Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg. She earned her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from the University of Miami (FL). She completed her internship and postdoctoral residency at the University Counseling Center at Florida State University, and went on to become a member of the staff following licensure, specializing in work with students of Color and marginalized populations, and nurturing a developing interest in training and supervision. Dr. Johnson transitioned to the Counseling Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago as Assistant Director of Training in 2008, where she was responsible for the coordination and administration of the advanced therapy externship. Most recently, she also assumed responsibility for the APA-Accredited Pre-doctoral Internship in her role as Interim Director of Training at UIC’s Counseling Center. Dr. Johnson has a deeply-rooted commitment to social justice, multicultural competence in treatment and supervision, and devotion to service in one’s daily work. An outcome of incorporating this philosophy into her roles as a clinician and supervisor has been the continual process of integrating the values of multicultural competence and social justice into the teaching and development of psychologists-in-training. In particular, her work in recent years has focused on addressing issues of social justice in clinical supervision by exploring the dynamics of power, privilege, and the interactions of individuals’ multiple identities within the supervisory triad, seeking opportunities to transform privilege into empowerment that can be shared. As Director of Clinical Training, Dr. Johnson will be available to assist students and faculty with all issues related to preparing for practicum and internship.

Leslie Wolowitz, Ph.D. as Associate Chair, Clinical Psychology programs

Leslie Wolowitz, PhD serves as the Associate Chair of the Clinical Psychology Doctoral Program at the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg. She received her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Michigan State University, after completing a two-year postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University. Dr. Wolowitz has been teaching and training clinical psychology doctoral students for over 20 years. She served as core faculty at ISPP-Chicago for over 8 years, at Antioch University in Santa Barbara, CA and most recently helped develop and Chair a doctoral program in global psychology at The Chicago School (TCSPP). Dr. Wolowitz teaches courses on theory, therapeutic intervention – basic and advanced practicum, cultural context and identity, and on special topics in global mental health issues. She is interested in researching how global consciousness in mentored and developed. Dr. Wolowitz has presented internationally and written about contextual diversity issues in psychoanalytic theory and practice. She is interested in the human development approach and how capacity building relates to macro and micro-level change for systems and individuals. She most recently served as a Faculty Exchange in Lima, Peru and led a field trip to Peru this summer, exploring how psychology is practiced and constructed – with internally displaced people and in a graduate program of psychology.

In her new role as Associate Chair, Dr. Wolowitz will wear many “hats” in providing assistance to the Department and its students. She will facilitate the development of the course schedule, hire and supervise needed adjunct faculty and overall is available to help students and faculty facilitate the functioning of the clinical psychology programs.

Daniel Lilie, Ph.D. as Director of the NWS Internship Consortium

Dr. Lille is Director of the Northwest Suburban Internship Consortium and Assistant Professor of the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg. He received his Ph.D. in Psychology from Indiana University, Bloomington and has had teaching positions at Beloit College, Ithaca College, Indiana University and at Loyola University, Chicago. Dr. Lilie has also been a practicing clinical psychologist for over 30 years and brings experience in both scientific and clinical contexts. He has been in practice at the Center for Psychological Services, Northfield, Illinois since 1995, providing psychological services including school and educational consulting, forensic evaluations, neuropsychological and psychological assessment, and psychotherapy. Practicum, internship and post-doctoral training are also provided at the Center. Dr. Lillie’s teaching and scholarly interests include neuropsychology, biological basis of behavior and its relationship to psychological disorders and clinical health psychology.

The Northwest Suburban Internship Consortium (NSIC) is new this year and is an attempt to provide strong local internship opportunities for Argosy, Schaumburg students. The consortium, which currently has 4 ISPP/Schaumburg interns, has applied for APPIC membership and our long term goal is for it to also be an APA accredited internship site. Dr. Lilie will direct the training experiences of our students at the several sites and also work towards adding additional sites to the consortium.

Kathleen Young, Psy.D. as Coordinator of the Neuropsychology Concentration

Dr. Young received her Psy.D. in 2010 from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg Campus where she completed the neuropsychology concentration. During her internship year, Dr. Young specialized in neuropsychology and geropsychology at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Battle Creek, Michigan. Dr. Young’s work during internship also included a focus on working with returning veterans presenting with comorbid posttraumatic stress disorder and mild traumatic brain injury. She has also completed additional training in neuropsychology, geropsychology, and rehabilitation psychology at the Hines Veterans Affairs Medical Center and Advocate Lutheran General Hospital.

Dr. Young is currently completing her postdoctoral fellowship in neuropsychology where she specializes in working with patients with mild traumatic brain injury, dementia, mild cognitive impairment, and learning disabilities. As part of her postdoctoral fellowship, Dr. Young also completes fitness-for-duty evaluations for the FAA. In addition, postdoctoral work includes work in forensic neuropsychology. In particular, Dr. Young completes assessments for individuals who have sustained a traumatic brain injury and are currently in litigation as well as workman’s compensation evaluations. Specialized areas of interest include working with older adults and the functional applications of neuropsychological assessment.

At present, Dr. Young who has the designation of Professor of Practice with the clinical psychology program is teaching courses in geriatric neuropsychology, a diagnostic practicum seminar, and an advanced practicum seminar for students completing advanced training experience in neuropsychology. She also serves on CRP committees for students completing projects with a focus in neuropsychology.

Recent Faculty Publications and Professional Activities

  • Dr. Mudita Rastogi had been invited to participate as a Scholar-in-Residence by the SAMHSA Minority Fellowship Program and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy (AAMFT) Winter Think Tank to be held on February 3-5, 2011 in Washington, DC. A mix of scholars from various disciplines and interdisciplinary areas in the social and behavioral sciences were invited to share their work with the SAMHSA Fellows, and to engage them around the areas of cultural competence, substance abuse and social justice. Dr. Rastogi's presentation focused on linking global issues with the practice of family therapy in the context of power and privilege. For more information on this topic please see Dr. Rastogi.
  • Dr. Carolyn Gralewski presented at the International Conference on the Teaching of Psychology in Vancouver July 29-31 2011. Dr. Gralewski presented the following two sessions: The Dreaded Group Presentation: A Strategy for Decreased Anxiety and Increased Learning and Utilizing an Adult Development Perspective to Reduce Anxiety of Young Adult Clinicians in Training. The conference is for teachers of psychology at universities, colleges and high schools who are interested in enhancing their teaching skills and learning new ideas.
  • Dr. Bob Eme and Psy.D. student Erin Sheffer presented a poster at the 2011 APA Annual Convention in Washington, D.C. August 6th 2011 on the "Cerebellum and Selective Attention." Division 40 of the American Psychological Association, the Division of Clinical Neuropsychology, is a scientific and professional organization of psychologists interested in the study of brain-behavior relationships, and the clinical application of that knowledge to human problems.
  • Dr. Rhonda Goldman is the organizing chair for the 28th Annual Conference of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration, to be held in Chicago this coming May. Dr. Goldman has presented at SEPI at international conferences over the past several years in the area of Emotion Focused Therapy. Dr. Goldman also gave an invited address at the American Psychological Association Annual Convention this past August, 2011 titled "Resolving the Personal Qualitative/Quantitative dilemma and Soothing Vulnerable Emotions, for Division 32 as part of her Early Career Award given to her by this APA Division.

Recent Student Presentations, Publications and Accomplishments

  • Psy.D. students Aimee Rodolff and Lynda Wargolet presented a poster at the The Midwest Pain Society's annual meeting which was held last October, 2010 at Northwestern University Medical Center. The Poster titled Sexual Abuse History in chronic Pain Patients: A Review of Assessment Practices and Treatment Impact received 1st. place at the conference.
  • Psy.D. student Robin Annis, M.A. and Andrea Kosten, M.A. presented a poster: Implications and Suggestions for differentiating mTBI from Other Comorbid Conditions within the GWOT Veteran Population at the Midwest Neuropsychological Conference. it discussed the implications associated with the diagnosis and treatment of those veterans with mTBI. They concluded that appropriate assessment and collaboration with other professionals are essential components of treatment for these veterans
  • Psy.D. student Ruth Anderson, MA, along with faculty member Dr. Kevin Kukoleck presented a paper at the Annual Conference of the American Society on Aging in San Francisco, CA. this past April. The presentation was titled: Factors Affecting Older Adults' Perceived Experiences of Positive and Negative Ageism.
  • Psy.D. student Angella Anderson, M.A. Presented at the International Conference of the Society for Psychotherapy Research held in Bern, Switzerland June 29-July 2. She was joined in the presentation by the primary researcher and program faculty Dr. Rhonda Goldman along with fellow graduate Angella Anderson and Mile Topel. This study examined the application of the case formulation method in Emotion-Focused Therapy to a successful case of Emotion-Focused Therapy (EFT) for Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD). Also, a model for EFT with GAD was proposed, and compared/contrasted to EFT with Depression.
