Clinical Psychology – PsyD Programs (Doctor of Psychology)
Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg offers a Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) in clinical psychology, in northwestern suburban Chicago. Our program focuses on broad and general training in clinical psychology as well as providing more in-depth opportunities to pursue areas of specialization in clinical psychology practice. Our PsyD program is accredited by the American Psychological Association and has continually been so since 1999.
At Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg the doctoral program focuses on theoretical and scientific foundations of clinical psychology as well as specific skills and knowledge in assessment and interventions. Students learn to understand, assess, and treat a wide range of human dysfunction using evidence-based and theoretically informed models. Clinical supervision, training, and scholarly mentorship from our expert faculty members contribute to the development of students scholarship and clinical competencies. We adhere to a practitioner-scholar model that is aligned with the competencies set forth by the National Council of Schools and Programs in Professional Psychology (NCSPP), as well as the core content areas established by the Commission on Accreditation of the American Psychological Association.
Graduates of the Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg are positioned to become licensed clinical psychologists and function in multiple roles as mental health professionals, serving diverse populations. We lay the foundation for ethical practice with individuals, couples and families to help develop human capacity with contextually sensitive approaches.
Our core faculty is comprised of experienced, diverse practitioner-scholars, who are active in practice, scholarship and research and often are leaders in their respective fields and areas of interest. We also offer areas of specialization for advanced students to begin to develop expertise in the areas of child and family psychology, clinical health psychology, neuropsychology and forensic psychology.
A Community of Engaged Learners
The Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg is located just 30 miles northwest of downtown Chicago. We offer an intimate on-campus experience for students, in a peaceful setting. A welcoming and inclusive community is fostered by both students and faculty. We have access to over 200 training sites, including major universities and hospitals in the city and suburbs.
Our stable group of core faculty is invested in creating a community of engaged learning for students and for faculty. Faculty shares a commitment to teaching core knowledge and competencies in professional clinical psychology, with awareness of the different strengths and challenges for each graduate student. The curriculum is organized around competencies in four areas germane to the education of a professional clinical psychologist. These areas of competency include:
- knowledge of the scientific and theoretical foundations of clinical psychology,
- skills in assessment and treatment of diverse populations utilizing evidence based approaches,
- the ability to establish and maintain effective and ethical relationships in professional roles and settings, and
- the ability to think critically and to effectively assess and evaluate research in the field of clinical psychology.
Our faculty teach, train, and mentor students through course instruction, practicum seminars, and first-year professionalization groups. These professionalization groups help students form strong bonds with peers and faculty. The pro group helps to acculturate students into the field of professional clinical psychology; scholarship and the ethics of clinical psychology. The curriculum is delivered through multiple teaching methods, including seminars, lectures, experiential learning and practicum supervision. Practicum seminars utilize a year-long, small group seminar format to engage students in the art and science of assessment, clinical intervention and case conceptualization.
Students receive multiple perspectives from site supervisors and faculty seminar leaders, as well as lively exchange with peers.
At Illinois School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Schaumburg students and faculty collaborate to find ways to engage each other in a mutual exchange of learning and professional development. The Multicultural Committee promotes inter-cultural exchange through sharing of divergent cultural traditions and perspectives between faculty and students. They sponsor regular diversity focused events and lunches. In addition, student council and Psi Chi (International Honor Society in Psychology) organize events and guest speakers that reflect trends in the field. These organizations work together to promote social responsibility using campus and extracurricular activities.
