Biography
Dr. Gary Howell is an Assistant Professor and Associate Director of Training at FSPP. He earned his doctorate in clinical psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago and received his Master’s in Counseling Psychology along the way in 2004. He also completed the Clinical Hypnosis Certificate program while attending Adler. He taught undergraduate psychology courses for over six years and has taught graduate courses at the Adler school for three years. Dr. Howell is the current chair of the Illinois Psychological Association’s Sexual Orientation Issues Section and is actively involved with several APA divisions as well. He is a licensed clinical psychologist in Illinois and Florida. He is the chair of the APA Division 44 Convention Planning Committee for 2013. He has experience working with children and adolescents in a therapeutic day school setting, specializes in working with LGBTQ clients and has extensive experience providing psychological testing services to patients in acute inpatient settings as well as LD evaluations for all ages. He has begun working with gay men in heterosexual relationships and also provides psychiatric evaluations and brief therapy consults in nursing home settings in Tampa. His theoretical orientation is integrative and finds the use of CBT and Adlerian interventions to be effective with most of his clients. He frequently presents at conferences in the area of LGBTQ issues and anti-bullying initiatives. He has taught the following graduate-level courses: Working with GLB Clients; Diversity-related courses; Social Psychology; Community Psychology; Public Policy, Social Change and Advocacy; Theories of Psychopathology; Diagnostic Psychopathology; Projective Personality Assessment; and Psychotherapy Practicum Seminar. Dr. Howell oversees the PRIDE group on campus at Argosy, Tampa.
