San Diego, California- January 10, 2010- San Diego County’s Veteran Service Office will be training their newly inducted Americorps members on December 15, 2010 at the new County Operations Center on 5560 Overland Avenue, Suite 310 as part Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Operation Welcome Home campaign.
Operation Welcome Home is a statewide initiative started by Governor Schwarzenegger to help veterans utilize their benefits and successfully transition back to civilian life. Approximately 80 Americorps members have been recruited across the state to aid veterans at the county level. The goal of the program is to work closely with non-profit organizations, faith-based groups, private donors and volunteers in each county to establish a network of care between state, federal and local government agencies that will better assist California’s veteran population.
CDVA has partnered with AmeriCorps, an organization that seeks to link members with community service and outreach projects in their local community. AmeriCorps is part of the Corporation for National and Community Service.
San Diego is one of nine Regional Outreach Teams that have been setup throughout the state by the California Department of Veteran Affairs (CDVA). Americorps members from the county flew to Sacramento at the beginning of the month for a three-day training event in the state’s capital. San Diego boasted the largest showing among the nine Regional Outreach Teams represented.
The training event will be the first step in the county Veteran Service Office’s efforts to begin to familiarize its members with the needs of San Diego County.
The office is currently located downtown at 734 West Beech Street but will be moving to the Overland site in February.
Argosy University, San Diego (www.argosy.edu) proudly serves as an AmeriCorps sponsor this year. Argosy University is a private academic institution dedicated to providing undergraduate and graduate degree programs to students in the fields of psychology and behavioral sciences, business, education, health sciences and undergraduate studies.
As part of their outreach, the University offers a military-inclusive benefits program that includes the Post 911 GI Bill and the Yellow Ribbon program. Through this initiative, tuition scholarships are offered to active duty, National Guard, and Reserve service members and their spouses, as well as to qualified veterans and retirees.
