(DRAPER, Utah – October 15, 2011) Argosy University, Salt Lake City is pleased to announce the launch of a Master of Arts in Mental Health Counseling program. Designed to help human services providers acquire the extensive knowledge and range of skills necessary to serve effectively in the profession, the program can be completed in as little as two years.
Courses and curricula are designed to parallel prevailing licensure and certification requirements as closely as possible. “We are excited to offer the program in the traditional three-year format and to be the first educational provider in the state of Utah to provide a path to degree completion for students that allows them to complete their studies in as few as two years,” says campus president David Tietjen.
The MA in Mental Health Counseling program is designed to provide graduates with the knowledge and skills required to explain and interpret all ethical and legal codes for counselors provided by professional counseling associations, and adhere to these standards at all times. In the program, students demonstrate sensitivity to the impact of multicultural issues on the counseling relationship and on treatment by developing and applying therapeutic approaches and techniques that respect multicultural differences and meet multicultural needs. Students will be taught to identify and apply core theories and research of the nature and needs of individuals at all developmental levels, apply core career development theories and decision-making models to increase client understanding of career and educational planning and placement.
They will have the opportunity to learn appropriate counseling techniques to engage the client in the interviewing process, to build and maintain rapport, and to begin to establish a therapeutic alliance, ethically and effectively conduct group counseling and understand the principles, issues, and dynamics of group work as well as the role of a group counselor. In addition, students will be taught how to identify and employ assessment instruments that would be most helpful in evaluating specific client problems or concerns and use, interpret, and apply various research methods such as qualitative, quantitative, single-case designs, action research, and outcome-based research, statistical analysis, needs assessment, and program evaluation.
The program is designed to allow students flexibility while pursuing a graduate degree. Courses are offered in a blended format that includes weeknight and weekend class meetings in addition to online instructional contact with instructors and peers. Some course instructors are mental health professionals who are currently working in the field and who bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the wide variety of courses offered.
The MA in Mental Health Counseling program requires the satisfactory completion of 60 semester credit hours, distributed as follows; required courses, 51 credit hours; and internship/practicum requirements, 9 credit hours. The Salt Lake City campus of Argosy University is able to offer students the ability to complete this program in as little as two years.
