Argosy University, Sarasota faculty lend a hand to Sarasota Manatee Association of Riding Therapy

SARASOTA, Dec. 10, 2013 — Argosy University, Sarasota faculty are working to make a difference for local non-profit organization, the Sarasota Manatee Association of Riding Therapy (SMART). The week of December 16, a group from the university will work to create a wheelchair accessible grooming station at the stables that will enable people with disabilities to assist with the grooming of horses.

“As a university known for educating students as future mental health practitioners, we wanted to support a foundation that served persons of special needs, either physical, emotional, or both,” says Dr. Joffrey S. Suprina, college chair and associate professor in the College of Psychology & Behavioral Science at Argosy University, Sarasota. “The grooming station we are building will give more clients of SMART the ability to participate in its programs. Grooming horses helps these individuals with physical exercise, emotional connection, increased coordination and a sense of accomplishment.”

The Sarasota Manatee Association for Riding Therapy (SMART) is dedicated to enhancing the physical, emotional, and cognitive growth of individuals with special needs through a quality program that provides educational and recreational therapeutic horseback riding, carriage driving and equine assisted activities. The organization is a partner agency of the United Way of Manatee County.
