(Tampa, Fla. – July 22, 2013) Argosy University, Tampa alumnus Maria Vizcarra has been appointed President of the Board of Directors of Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. Vizcarra is a 2013 graduate of the Doctor of Education in Instructional Leadership program at Argosy University, Tampa.
Tampa Hispanic Heritage, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization founded in 1979 whose mission is to foster, preserve and celebrate the Hispanic heritage and culture of the Tampa Bay area. The organization serves as an umbrella for Tampa Bay area Hispanic groups and other interested parties that want to share the rich Spanish language, culture and traditions with the community during Tampa's Hispanic Heritage Celebration.
Vizcarra is a native of Lima, Peru and graduated from the Sagrado Corazón Sophianum School in Lima before relocating to Florida in 1981. While running her own small business as a licensed family childcare provider, she pursued her education, completing both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from the School of Human Services at Springfield College. She then went on to complete her doctoral degree at Argosy University, Tampa.
Vizcarra created the first Hispanic Family Child Care Association in Hillsborough County and the State of Florida. In 2000, she began to work at the Hillsborough County Child Care Licensing Program. In 2004, she received the Service and Program Improvement Award, and in 2005 was selected as the 2005 Hillsborough County Hispanic Woman of the Year within Hillsborough County employees.
