Dr. Maggie Dancel

2016, Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology

American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California

Clinical Psychologist at Nassau Psychology, P.C.

Dr. Maggie Dancel is a full-time clinical psychologist at Nassau Psychology, P.C. in Long Island, New York. She works in a private practice that serves people of all ages and cultures—but her specialty is individual and couples sex therapy. She also has a part-time position at Bleuler Psychotherapy Center, a community mental health center in Queens, New York. Once she acquires the necessary hours, Dancel will take the exam (EPPP) to become licensed in the State of New York.

Dancel earned a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California in 2016. She chose Argosy University’s program because of the clinical emphasis, comprehensive course of study and accreditation. “The program was focused, and I wanted to earn the highest degree available in the field from a reputable institution,” she said. Dancel completed her degree in five years.

“I saw the benefits of the education program after my first year,” she shared. “During my practicum experiences, clinical supervisors recognized that I was well-prepared and knowledgeable. I had the confidence to work in the field and a strong foundation to excel and cultivate my skills.” She noted that the faculty pushed her to succeed. “They saw my potential, they believed in me and encouraged me.”

To complete her pre-doctoral hours, she applied to positions across the country and settled on a community mental health center focused on Asian-Americans in San Jose, California, close to friends. She recommends that current students rely on their support systems to help them through the challenges of higher education. “Complete one semester at a time and remember that you are not alone,” she stated. “You have classmates that easily become your best friends.”

Today, Dancel is excited to be living in Manhattan, an area that attracted her because of its strong roots in psychoanalysis and psychodynamic theory. She described the city as welcoming and supportive, and while it was a challenge moving across the country, she is pleased to be a member of the city’s professional community. “When I initially moved to New York, I was proactive in cold-calling psychologists, networking and attending events to get my foot in the door,” she mentioned. “Professionals in the city were willing to help and guide me.”

Dancel is a member of the following organizations: American Psychological Association, the New York State Psychological Association and the American Association of Sexuality Educators Counselors and Therapists. She is working to become a certified as a sex therapist and attends monthly trainings to attain credits toward certification. Dancel was also recently selected as a “Top Healthcare Provider” in Forest Hills, New York by the International Association of HealthCare Professionals.

Founded Mental Health Clinic Specializing in Treatment for Children and Teens
Founded Mental Health Clinic Specializing in Treatment for Children and Teens

Albert Knapp
2012, Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology
American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California
Founder/CEO of Albert Knapp & Associates

“I chose the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California because I wanted an American Psychological Association accredited* program and because I knew I wanted a respected degree that came with practical experience.”

Dr. Albert Knapp is the founder and CEO of Albert Knapp & Associates, a mental health clinic that specializes in providing treatment to children and teenagers both on and off the autism spectrum. “We provide psychological testing, play therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, applied behavior analysis and individualized education program advocacy services. I have a team of mental health interns at various levels of training whom I supervise along with an applied behavior analysis department that I oversee administratively,” he states. Knapp is a Licensed Psychologist (PSY 25873) and a Board Certified Behavior Analyst - Doctoral (BCBA).

Knapp earned his Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California in 2012. It was the culmination of work begun as an undergraduate when he worked as a paraprofessional in a special education school for children with autism. “During that experience, I learned about applied behavior analysis and what a BCBA was. I then moved to California to pursue my Master of Arts in Psychology and BCBA. During that time I worked at agencies that provide applied behavior analysis treatment to children—first as a behavior interventionist, then at a supervisory level,” Knapp adds.

He adds that he chose to earn a doctoral level degree because “selecting a terminal degree in a field of study is one way to distinguish yourself as an expert. I chose the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California because I wanted an American Psychological Association accredited* program and because I knew I wanted a respected degree that came with practical experience.”

Knapp was—and continues to be—particularly influenced by his instructor and mentor, Dr. Kim VanderDussen. “She is always receptive to taking my phone calls and emails to provide support and offer her expertise. Additionally, my clinical research project chair, Dr. Steven Berger, was instrumental in helping me to complete my clinical research project in only nine months. He helped me to realize how [much easier] it is to complete a goal when you have a team of people helping you,”mentions Knapp.

Knapp continued working in applied behavior analysis while pursuing his Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology. He says, “during my pre/post doc training, I worked with adolescents and teens with mental health and substance issues, and very much missed working with individuals with autism. Once I became licensed, I started an autism spectrum disorder diagnostic testing clinic at the job where I held during my doctoral studies. After one year the agency decided to no longer offer psychological services and I decided to start my own clinic at that time.”

He mentions that his education allowed him to focus on child and adolescent therapy and testing. “This taught me how to effectively work with child and adolescents who do not have autism. I have started to create online content to help other therapists provide effective treatment to children. I am also starting to be sought after as an expert in autism from lawyers, medical doctors, school administrators, and other mental health professionals,” he says.

Knapp recommends that current students identify and pursue their passion. “Find what population you are passionate about as early in your schooling as possible. Then be deliberate about finding opportunities to learn more about the population and work with the population,” says Knapp.

In addition to his clinical work, Knapp is a founding board member and clinical director for the Redondo Beach non-profit Our Village, a social learning community, which provides low to-no cost evidenced-based social skills training to individuals with social difficulties in childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood.

Leads Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital
Leads Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program at Sharp Mesa Vista Hospital

Amber Rochelle Salvador
2009, Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology
2012, Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology
American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California
Clinical Psychologist at Sharp Healthcare

“The American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California provided the foundation from which I am building my career. I will always be grateful for the knowledge I received and the incredible mentors I observed and learned from during my graduate experience.”

Dr. Amber Rochelle Salvador is a clinical psychologist, leading the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program (DBT-IOP, DBT Skills IOP) at Sharp Mesa Vista, a psychiatric hospital in San Diego, California. “I am responsible for the entire process of a patient's treatment from admission to discharge. This includes marketing the program, facilitating referrals, scheduling and conducting intake evaluations, completing administrative duties and case management to ensure insurance coverage, as well as orienting new patients.” Salvador also teaches a DBT skills group, provides individual DBT therapy, and offers couples and family sessions. She co-facilitates the DBT family support group, conducts suicide risk assessments and treatment plans for patients, participates in weekly treatment team case presentations and coordinates discharge planning.

Salvador began her service with the Sharp Healthcare system after earning her doctorate degree. “I completed my postdoctoral fellowship at Sharp Healthcare, where I worked in the Cognitive Intensive Outpatient Program and the Dialectical Behavior Therapy Intensive Outpatient Program (DBT-IOP, DBT Skills IOP). I was then hired on as a full time, licensed clinical psychologist,” she said. Salvador also has a private practice in La Jolla, California where she assists adults suffering from major mood disorders, anxiety disorders, substance abuse, and personality disorders. “I utilize mindfulness, cognitive behavioral therapy, dialectical behavioral therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy, and spiritual principles to inform the treatment I provide,” said Salvador.

Salvador earned two degrees from the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California. In 2009, she completed a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology. In 2012, she earned a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology. “[My education] taught me the power of discipline and gave me the tenacity to work tirelessly towards my goals,” she said. “[It] shaped my work ethic, my ability to organize, manage time effectively, and develop professional relationships. I learned the importance of serving the community and living according to my values. [My education] provided the foundation from which I am building my career. I will always be grateful for the knowledge I received and the incredible mentors I observed and learned from during my graduate experience.”

She adds that her instructors prepared her well to be a competitive intern and eventual clinical psychologist. “I consider many of the professors to be mentors and I greatly appreciate the heart, expertise, and dedication they exemplified. The faculty modeled what it looks like to pursue numerous passions and provide ultimate value and service to their students.”

She chose to attend the American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University | Southern California, located in Orange County, because she’s always had a natural curiosity for understanding why people do what they do. The school provided the educational program that she wanted—and was situated in her desired location of Southern California. Today, she sees the benefits of that decision when she’s assisting patients and receiving recognition from her peers. “I was nominated for the leadership development team within the Sharp Healthcare system and was asked to conduct an informal study within the DBT department and present it at the leadership conference,” she said. “In addition, I am building my speaking career and have been given opportunities to present at Sharp's Grand Rounds and the annual women's conference two years in a row.”

Salvador has served as a media expert on the subjects of grief and loss, seasonal affective disorder during the holidays, and the loss of the Chargers football team in San Diego. She is currently writing a book that will focus on the evolution of the soul as it pertains to aligning your life with your soul's mission and purpose. “I am excited to continue building my career as an author, professional speaker and psychologist, inspiring others in total mind/body wellness,” she said.

Salvador’s perseverance has opened doors within her profession, and showed her that she can accomplish her goals. “With the knowledge I obtained [in school], coupled with my clinical practice and life experience, I feel empowered to serve others in ways that align with my values and specific career aspirations to be a professional speaker, author, and psychologist,” said Salvador.
