Integrative Theoretical Orientation

The American School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, Northern Virginia is distinctive in its commitment and implementation of an integrative approach to clinical practice. Psychotherapy integration is an approach that looks beyond the confines of single-school approaches to see what can be learned from other perspectives. It is characterized by an openness to integrating diverse theories and techniques. Interest in this field grew after the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration (SEPI) was established in 1983. SEPI founder Dr. George Stricker is a member of our faculty and author of the chapter on psychotherapy integration found in most psychotherapy textbooks. Dr. Barry Wolfe, another SEPI founder, is also a retired faculty member. Today, many of our faculty members and students belong to SEPI, and the spirit of integration pervades our program.

Student Professional Development

Student professional development, outside of program requirements, is strongly encouraged and supported. Our students have been awarded prestigious fellowships, research grants and student paper awards from the American Psychological Association. Many students attend professional conferences and workshops, and students may apply for funding to support these activities. A number of students publish scholarly articles with faculty members, while other students accompany faculty to lobby on Capitol Hill for mental health treatment and prevention policies.

Mid Atlantic Internship Consortium

Our faculty is committed to developing scientifically-grounded practitioners and includes three full-time Directors of Training as well as the Mid Atlantic Internship Consortium (MAIC) Director. The MAIC (an Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Centers member) is accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and is available exclusively to our students and has approximately 10 regional internship sites with over 25 total positions. It significantly increases the opportunities for students to remain in the DC area for internships, to participate in a rich variety of training activities and to connect with local postdoctoral opportunities to further their careers.
