Minnesota’s Dr. Raja M. David Presents at International Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment Conference

Raja M. David, PsyD, ABPP, LP, program dean at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology, participated in three presentations at the second International Collaborative/Therapeutic Assessment Conference in Austin, Texas.

Dr. David led a panel discussion on ethical factors to consider when conducting collaborative/therapeutic assessments. He also partnered with Julie Cradock-O'Leary, one of the creators of the Thurston Craddock Test of Shame (TCTS), to present on TCTS and its use as a part of a collaborative/therapeutic assessment. Finally, he joined a panel of psychologists to discuss how to apply the TCTS model in different work environments.

Twin Cities’ Dr. Margit Berman Presents at Two Workshops, Publishes Three Articles

Dr. Margit Berman, faculty member at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University, recently presented a two-day intensive workshop in Albuquerque, New Mexico on the topic of “Acceptance and Commitment Therapy for PESI.” The workshop helped attendees to develop highly practical, evidence-based skills, case conceptualization techniques and powerful strategies that will improve outcomes for:

  • Anxiety issues
  • Post-traumatic Stress Disorder
  • Mood disorders
  • Obesity
  • Eating disorders
  • Trauma
  • Weight management

Additionally, Berman presented a half-day continuing education workshop on the intervention program that she developed called “Accept Yourself!” The program is a self-acceptance-based intervention for weight, body image, and mood concerns in women. The workshop was presented at the American Psychological Association annual convention in Washington, D.C.

At the Washington, D.C. conference, Berman also organized and moderated a discussion on “Social Justice in Psychotherapy Science.” The discussion featured a number of nationally prominent psychotherapy and social justice researchers, including Janet Helms.

“The school prepared me to be a well-rounded clinician,” Shah said. “It provided me with the skills, tools, and confidence needed for this career. It also helped me to gain more awareness about myself and what I bring to the work that I do.”

Supervises, Trains and Supports Doctoral-Level Students Completing Practicum, Internship or Fellowship

Tina Shah is the director of training at Washburn Center for Children in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She provides supervision, training and support to doctoral-level students who are completing a practicum, predoctoral internship or postdoctoral fellowship. Shah also provides direct client services.

Shah chose Argosy University to build upon her undergraduate degree in child psychology. “I wanted to provide direct services to people, specifically children, adolescents and their families, so I went on to complete my Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology and Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology at the Minnesota School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University,” she said. “I chose the program because of its focus on clinical psychology.”

“Once I obtained licensure as a psychologist, I was very involved in the training program and providing supervision to doctoral-level trainees at the community mental health center where I was employed—where I had completed my practicum and postdoctoral fellowship placements,” she added. Shah went on to become the assistant supervisor of the agency’s psychology training program before moving into her current position.

She mentioned that seeing transformations is the best part of her career. “[I enjoy] seeing the positive impact a strong relationship can have on a person, whether it be a trainee or a client,” she said. “It is amazing to see people develop and change in positive ways.”

Shah admits that finding the balance to complete her doctoral degree was challenging. “It was helpful to have others in my life to remind me how to create balance and give me perspective and hope during those difficult and overwhelming times,” she added.

She cites the supportive, knowledgeable faculty as being integral to her success in the classroom. “The program prepared me to be a well-rounded clinician,” Shah said. “It provided me with the skills, tools and confidence needed for this career. It also helped me to gain more awareness about myself and what I bring to the work that I do.”

Shah encourages current students to follow their passion. “Take time to cultivate meaningful relationships with professors, supervisors and the clients that you serve,” she stated. “Lastly, culture matters. Explore who you are, the experiences you have had and what you bring to the work you do.”
