Why a Doctor of Psychology Degree in School Psychology?

Argosy University is committed to the preparation of candidates to enter the profession with the competencies reflected in the practice model described by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP). The goals of Argosy University, Phoenix’s School Psychology program are to provide training that enables school psychology candidates to develop and apply complex knowledge, skills, and competencies, specific to the role of a school psychologist. The school psychology programs are based on a scholar-practitioner model that emphasizes the integration of theory, research, and practice, especially as related to work with diverse, underserved, and marginalized populations. The programs are designed to prepare candidates who strive to improve the quality and scope of services available to all children and families. Throughout the program, candidates are involved in school psychology fieldwork associated with their courses, as well as practicum or pre-internship field experiences completed during the program of study, and internship at the completion of courses. Standards-based assessment of candidates is integrated throughout the programs and focuses on theoretical and empirical knowledge, skills and professional dispositions.

The program emphasizes the development of attitudes, knowledge, and skills essential to the preparation of school psychologists who are committed to the ethical provision of quality services to diverse populations. Students can develop core competencies in psychological and educational foundations; cognitive, academic, and personality assessment; psycho-educational interventions; statistics and research methodology; and research initiatives. This 68-credit-hour degree program is based on standards developed by the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) and is designed to prepare students who wish to pursue certification at the PsyD level. The PsyD in School Psychology state certification degree program is approved by the Florida Department of Education and the Arizona Department of Education to lead to school psychology certification upon completion of all program and state requirements.

Accreditations

  • The College of Education at Argosy University is accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). The accreditation covers advanced educator preparation programs across all campuses of Argosy University and its online programs. However, the accreditation does not include individual education courses that the institution offers to P-12 educators for professional development, re-licensure, or other purposes.
