About the Master of Arts (MA) Degree in Marriage and Family Therapy at Argosy University, Hawaii

Argosy University, Hawaii, is one of only two local universities to offer the Master of Arts (MA) in Marriage and Family Therapy program. Our program provides you with the training and knowledge needed to pursue a professional career as master’s level practitioners. Marriage and Family Therapy is recognized by the Public Health Service Act as one of the five core mental health professions.

Designed to enable busy professionals to balance the demands of career, family, and school, most coursework is offered in both blended and online formats. Classes are held on the weekends. Our unique program uses a cohort model, in which students graduate with the same peers with whom they began the program. Throughout the process, our award-winning, supportive faculty is committed to helping all students achieve their professional goals.

What knowledge and skills will I gain from completing the Hawaii Master of Arts (MA) in Marriage and Family Therapy degree program?

The Master of Arts (MA) in Marriage and Family Therapy program prepares graduates with the necessary skills, knowledge and training to function effectively in their profession, treating individuals, couples and families. You can learn to apply psychological- and systems- theory, research, and ethical therapeutic skills. You can also develop the skills to work with a diverse range of clients in a variety of treatment settings, such as mental health clinics, counseling centers, and private practices.

After program completion, students may take the Credentialed Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC) test. They will also be prepared to take the National Marriage and Family Therapy (LMFT) license exam, which, when passed, allows them to open their own private practice.*

What career opportunities are there for graduates of the Master of Arts (MA) in Family and Marriage Counseling degree program?

Program graduates are employed throughout Hawaii’s professional behavioral health community as counselors, working with the homeless and people who suffer from substance abuse. Graduates of this program are prepared to pursue employment as Guidance Counselors, Marriage Counselors, and Family Therapists.

Our program graduates are employed by a variety of companies and organizations, including the Department of Education, the State of Hawaii, Oahu Community Correctional Center, Hina Mauka, Kahi Mohala, and Child and Family Services. Graduates may also continue to licensure and launch their own practice.
