Argosy University, Online Programs graduate and Program Director for Photography at The Art Institutes of Pittsburgh -Online Division, Dr. Douglas Barkey, recently presented at the Creating a Culture of Excellence 2015 conference, a virtual conference dedicated to excellence in online education. Dr. Barkey is a 2014 graduate with a Doctor of Education Degree in Educational Leadership.
Barkey’s presentation examined how students perceive the credibility of their instructors in an exclusively Internet-based learning environment. According to Barkey, research has demonstrated that students increased their learning and gave their instructors higher performance scores and were more satisfied when they perceived their teachers as being credible educators. The three dimensions of credibility: competence, trustworthiness, and perceived caring were analyzed in relation to instructor communication through a mixed-methods study using a perceived credibility survey, a student satisfaction survey, student participant interviews, and instructor posts from purposely selected online classrooms. Dr. Barkey discussed how faculty can create and demonstrate credibility, establish competence, demonstrate caring, and build trust in an online learning environment.
