EAGAN, Minn. September 9, 2013-- Argosy University, Twin Cities is pleased to announce the launch of a public lecture series featuring graduates of the campus. The first event, "Understanding Hmong Culture," will take place from 9 am - 3 pm on September 20 at the university's Eagan campus, located at 1515 Central Parkway in Eagan, MN 55121. There is no charge to attend.
The event will feature Mai Vang, Chief Operation Officer of Gemican, Inc., a 2010 Master of Business Administration graduate from the campus and a host of other speakers and panelists who represent perspectives from the Hmong community. Participants will participate in lectures and panel discussions centered on cultural sensitivity of this population. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the 18 Hmong clans, how traditional Hmong community structure has changed in Minnesota and traditional Hmong approaches to medicine, healthcare decision-making, mental health counseling and divorce.
According to Vang, the impetus to organize the conference stemmed from her desire to, "shed light on the challenges Hmong people are facing in the health and wellness system today."
"There is a need to examine diversity from the Hmong point of view versus the institutional point of view," says Dr. Karen Gulliver, Chair of the Master of Business Administration program at Argosy University, Twin Cities. "The conference is driven by people from the Hmong community and is as much an opportunity for them to be heard as it is for others to gain insight into their culture."
