Assists Clients Struggling with Substance Abuse

Marcia Ellis-Zuric

2017, Bachelor of Arts in Psychology

Argosy University, Los Angeles

Alcohol Substance Abuse Director for American Health Services

Marcia Ellis-Zuric is an alcohol substance abuse director for American Health Services in Venice Beach, California. She is responsible for intakes, assessing clients’ needs, providing referrals, running group sessions, treatment planning and one-on-one sessions. She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from Argosy University, Los Angeles in 2017.

In addition to her work at American Health Services, she provides free assistance to people in her home community of Compton, California. “I own my own business to hold community events including anger management classes, parenting classes, drug and alcohol counseling and motivational groups meetings,” she said. Her nonprofit organization, MBW Heavenly Vision Enterprises, was started by Ellis-Zuric and her mother. Most of her clients are low income families who come to the center on Saturdays.

Ellis-Zuric recently added to her professional skillset—working as an instructor at Los Angeles Institute for Drug & Alcohol Abuse Counselors. She taught her first class in the fall of 2017 and will continue teaching in the spring of 2018, assisting students who want to become drug and substance abuse counselors.

As a single mom to two teens, Ellis-Zuric knew she needed to grow professionally to move up in the workplace. She also needed to earn a bachelor’s degree. She chose Argosy University, Los Angeles, because it fit into her busy schedule and the admissions counselors took time to explain the program offerings to her.

“Leading up to Argosy University, I went to vocational school and to [a larger school] where I felt lost—just a number,” she stated. “I quit school. Then one of my co-workers told me about Argosy University. I met with the admissions department and I felt like I was at home when I walked in the doors. They took the time with me and took me through the technology and computer labs I’d be using as a student.”

Her goal is to become a professor and she’s working toward a Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology at Argosy University, Los Angeles. “I am able to do my homework anywhere,” she added. “I can get access to my coursework anywhere.”

Her love of teaching was inspired by her Argosy University instructors, who mentored and pushed her to succeed. “They were alongside me the whole way,” she said. “I want to do the same thing for someone else. I really want to help people in the homeless population and [assist in] everything related to curbing addiction. I have so much passion to help students and my clients to become successful and live a greater quality of life.”
