Associate Professor at DeVry University, Retired from Accounting to Pursue Teaching

Associate Professor of Accounting at DeVry University

Arlene Goodman is an associate professor of accounting at DeVry University. She’s a 2012 graduate of Argosy University, Sarasota where she earned a Doctor of Business in Business Administration. “I pursued the degree so I could become a full-time professor and teach upper level courses,” she said.

Goodman chose Argosy University because it provided a blended program of online and in-school learning. She added that the program provided the tools she needed to become a better instructor—and to hold multiple adjunct positions over the years. Goodman also cited her supportive instructors, who were dedicated and pushed her to reach her potential.

Prior to attending Argosy University, Sarasota, Goodman earned a Master of Science in Accounting from Long Island University, CW Post. This led her into a 20-year career in accounting. In 2004, she began teaching as an adjunct professor at Keiser University in Pembroke Pines, Florida—and quickly realized that teaching would be her next career step after retiring from accounting.

“I began my studies at Argosy University in October 2006 and defended my dissertation in December 2012,” she stated. “I also have an Advanced Professional Certificate in International Business from Argosy University. Most of my classes were completed at the school facility, which I absolutely loved. Over the years, I made many friends in both of the programs and had excellent [instructors]. If not for Argosy University, I would not have the position that I hold today and I wouldn’t enjoy my ‘retirement’ as much as I do.”

Goodman added that current students should remain focused and understand that the road to graduation will not be easy. “When you begin this journey, it is not something that can be completed when there is time,” she stated. “This is your focus and you need to adjust your life around the program.” She took her own advice when she received a cancer diagnosis. The surgeon gave her one week to prepare for surgery—and she quickly got everything in order. “Coming out of ICU, I was working to complete my assignments while hooked up to tubes.”

In addition to her teaching, Goodman is involved with Junior Achievement in Phoenix, Arizona and is a judge for the Future Business Leaders of America.
