Kit Hill already had a full plate working as a Licensed Marriage Family Therapist and a Clinical Director for a New Life Group clinic. Still, he wanted to achieve more, ultimately choosing to expand his expertise and pursue a doctoral degree from Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area.
At his clinic, Hill works with veterans and a range of patients recovering from abuse and other traumas. Currently, he supervises the clinic’s administrative staff, licensed staff and interns and is also responsible for the clinic’s marketing and outreach programs.
Before taking on the role of clinical director, he had little formal management or leadership training. “With a great staff and by applying what I had read and learned from others, I was able to create a successful clinic,” he explained.
Despite all he was able to accomplish, Hill felt that he had room to grow. When he talked with two of his interns who were enrolled in the Doctor of Education (EdD) in Counseling Psychology program at Argosy University, San Francisco Bay Area, he found what he was looking for. “They kept talking about how much they enjoyed classes and about the feasibility of the partially online program. I listened to them rave about it and finally decided it was for me,” said Hill.
Argosy University turned out to be a great fit. “The professors and staff gently pulled at me to increase the depth and breadth of my understanding of the human condition. At the same time, they did not impede my curiosity and creativity, giving me the freedom to explore areas of psychology that I hadn’t even dreamed of,” he said.
Hill graduated in 2011 and, thanks largely to his degree, he is now exploring new professional roles, including executive coaching and organizational consulting, focusing on organizational leadership and development. He has also entered the world of academic consulting in which he guides college students as they work on research projects, theses and dissertations.
Ultimately, Hill believes the EdD in Counseling Psychology program at Argosy University was the right choice for him and for his career. “The EdD program helped me to gain a much deeper understanding of human development, the role of character in life, and the role of attachment and individuation as it pertains to healthy functioning. Applying these lessons has been very helpful in expanding my career.”
