Coordinates Nursing Team That Cares for Victims of Non-violent Crimes

Natalie Fiore is a forensic nurse examiner at the Medical Center of Aurora, Colorado. She coordinates a team of nurses who care for victims of violent crimes by collecting evidence, taking photographs and providing resources to the victims. She is also called to testify in court, and in 2015 served as an expert witness in a case leading to the conviction of a sexual predator.

Prior to working in this position, Natalie worked as a labor and delivery nurse for 17 years. She also has experience in the emergency and traumatic brain injury departments.

When she began her studies at Argosy University, Denver, Natalie had not been in school since 1996. She faced many challenges—including learning how to navigate her computer work. Natalie relied on classmates to help her out. “Time management was difficult and I had to find a work/life balance,” she said.

She added that her Bachelor of Science in Nursing, earned in 2017, lead to a higher-level position. “Without my degree, I would not be in a management position,” she added. Her coursework included research and writing papers on sexual assault and forensics—work that has a direct impact on her work.

Natalie mentioned that one of her instructors, Phyllis James, encouraged her to start a quality sexual assault program—and supported her vision both as a student and a graduate.

Natalie was excited to announce that she received a Luminary award and was nominated for a Nightingale 2018 award. Natalie is involved with the sexual assault response team for the 17th and 18th judicial districts and she and her team teach first responders how to care for victims of sexual assault. Her licensures and certifications include: Advance fetal monitoring, Neonatal Resuscitation Program, Basic Life Support, Advance Cardiac Life Support and Trauma Nursing Core Course.

She encouraged current students to stay focused and learn to balance school, work, and family. “Keep going. It will all be worth it.”
