Grad pioneers equine-assisted psychotherapy practice

Dr. Julia Klco is a busy professional who loves what she does. As a clinical psychologist, director of psychology training and internships at the Janet Wattles Mental Health Center in Rockford, Ill., and adjunct professor at Argosy University, Schaumburg's Illinois School of Professional Psychology, her busy work schedule requires her to juggle many cases and work with a diverse group of people. The prestigious award recognizes Bradley's endless effort at Gladden Middle School to provide students with an exceptional education in an environment that promotes creativity, academic excellence, and teamwork. Among her efforts, Bradley has initiated teacher leadership councils, effective behavior teams, student recognition programs, and faculty study groups. She also encourages the utilization of technology in order to enhance learning.

As challenging as her career may seem, Julia has an obstacle which she must confront daily: Julia has multiple sclerosis, a chronic, unpredictable disease of the central nervous system (the brain, optic nerves, and spinal cord).

Yet genuine passion for her work and a zest for life have helped Julia face her physical malady and extend a helping hand to so many others. In addition to her work at Argosy University, Schaumburg and the Janet Wattles Mental Health Center, Julia serves as the clinical director at the Center for Assessment and Psychological Services. She is founder and director of the Walnut Creek Whisperers, an equine-assisted psychotherapy practice that includes corporate training and team building using horses. She is also an active supporter of the Epilepsy Foundation and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

Julia received her master's and doctoral degrees in clinical psychology from Argosy University, Schaumburg in 1999, and was even named Argosy University, Schaumburg's Alumni of the Year in 2002, the year she graduated from the school. "I choose to attend Argosy University, Schaumburg primarily because I was impressed with the quality and qualifications of the faculty," says Julia. "The mentoring I received from faculty clearly contributed to the success I am experiencing today."

Julia truly enjoys helping others find their own successes, and this positive spirit not only gives her energy, but also drives her to be innovative in her career. "A healthy balance of self-care and work allows me to pursue all of my interests. During my time at Argosy University, Schaumburg, I found enough flexibility in the program to pursue independent interests in fields such as animal assisted psychotherapy.

"I am confident in saying that the academic and clinical programming offered at Argosy University, Schaumburg is superior, and prepared me well to succeed in my professions."
