Helps to Protect the United States Financial System from Abuse

2007, Doctor of Business Administration, Management Concentration, Argosy University, Sarasota

Thomas Burns knew early on that his interest in math and research would allow him to pursue a number of careers. So he networked and looked into options, deciding on a career path in business. He earned bachelor's and master’s degrees in business—then completed his education with a Doctor of Business Administration from Argosy University, Sarasota.

Today, he’s working as a vice president and manager of anti-money laundering investigations for Regions Bank. “I have 34 direct report investigators engaged in the detection, investigation, and reporting of terrorist financing, money laundering, and other criminal activities,” he says.

Thomas recently joined Regions Bank after 15 years with Wells Fargo where he was a Financial Crimes Manager. He says he’s proud to play a role in helping to protect the company, public, and United States financial system from abuse by terrorists, money launderers and other criminal enterprises. “I have published several articles on different business and financial crime topics and I’m the owner of the LinkedIn Group Everything AML, which has over 3,000 members.” Thomas also volunteers for the organizations “Feed the Hungry” and “World Community Grid.”

He recommends that current students immerse themselves in their areas of interest by joining industry groups. “You can usually become a student or associate member of a professional group without any certifications or licenses. Then you can attend the free networking events put on by industry groups and begin to network yourself by showing up and mingling with professionals that are currently doing what you want to be able to do. Let group members know that you are trying to get your foot in the door and they will help you.”

Thomas, who in 2007 earned a Doctor of Business Administration with a concentration in Management from Argosy University, Sarasota, says that his education opened doors that otherwise would have remained closed. “I was fortunate to have many seasoned professors who have had a career in industry prior to teaching—and because of that, they had a lot of actual examples to discuss.”
