Investigates, Handles, and Manages Workers’ Compensation Claims for Large Hospital/Insurance Company
Liza Shaftic chose to earn a Master of Science in Management from Argosy University, Online Programs because she wanted to build a strong career. She also holds a Bachelor of Science in Communications from Slippery Rock University. Liza joined her employer, a large hospital/insurance agency in Pittsburgh, prior to her 2012 graduation and is responsible for investigating, handling, and managing workers’ compensation claims. In just four years, she’s received two promotions—opportunities she believes are the result of earning an advanced degree.
To manage claims, Liza reviews the initial incident, receives and analyzes medical information, accepts or denies claims, pays bills, and assigns surveillance on claimants. When claims go into litigation, she works closely with the company’s legal counsel throughout hearings and testimonies. "I love my work and feel accomplished in my position. Without my degree, I don't believe I would be in the position I am and I believe it's due to what I have learned and how I have grown as a professional."
Liza chose to attend Argosy University, Online Programs because of its management programs. "Each class in the management program helped me to learn organizational skills and time management. [My instructors] were extremely helpful. When I needed them or had a question, they were a phone call away and really helped me during my [time at school]."
In addition to her career, Liza volunteers as a member of the company's Event Committee. She also volunteers at her local animal shelter in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. She says that earning an advanced degree while at her employer allowed her to look for new positions within the company. But working and attending school at the same time was challenging. "It wasn't always easy. When it wasn't, I reminded myself that I was learning something. All of my hard work is what was helping and changing me."
