Manages Human Resources and Recruitment for Honolulu’s HART System

Dember Domen is a human resources specialist for the Honolulu Authority for Rapid Transit (HART), responsible for attending job fairs, recruitment, payroll, employee-related issues and benefits. She is the company’s only human resources employee, managing benefits and services for 100 people.

“I found my career before my education,” said Domen. She began working in human resources after high school and quickly saw the need to earn a university degree. Domen had applied for her current job prior to earning a degree and was turned down. “They insisted that I get my degree. I reapplied and was hired after I graduated.” She worked toward an associate’s degree at another university before learning that she could transfer those credits to Argosy University’s Bachelor of Science in Business Administration program.

Domen didn’t stop there. She continued in her studies with Argosy University and, in 2014, earned a Master of Business Administration degree. Domen is the first in her family to earn a graduate degree, and is proud to care and support both herself and her family.

She describes Argosy University as a close-knit community where students and instructors respect and help each other. The school taught her to be disciplined and provided real-world experience that prepared her for her career. “I wasn't a writer but I could write answers to situational experiences,” she said.  “I was ready to write on the topic and could express myself well. The faculty members ended up using my work for examples to their other classes.”

Domen views her job as an opportunity to go into the community to speak with women about employment opportunities. “I like giving back and empowering people to do great things—and being a positive influence to women in my life,” she stated.

Domen recommends that current students stay focused and work toward their goals. “[Education] is an investment,” she stated. “Education and independence are priceless. There isn't a day I regret.”
