Specializes in Psychological Evaluations for Children and Teens; Advises Media on Bullying

Dr. Nekeshia Hammond is a speaker, author, and the owner/chief executive officer of her own company, Hammond Psychology & Associates, P.A. “At the practice, my specialty area is psychological evaluations for children and teens,” she said. “In the community, I consult with the media regularly on topics related to bullying, children's mental health, learning disabilities and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.” She opened her practice in 2009, one year after earning a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology from the Florida School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.

Hammond chose Argosy University because of the school’s small size and professional setting. “I got to know my [instructors] and other students in the class,” she said. “I also had heard wonderful things about how prepared I would be for the workforce [after graduation].”

Hammond is a believer in the strength of the school’s clinical skills training program. “I owe my psychological testing expertise to the outstanding [instructors] that taught me the skills I use today,” Hammond stated.

“Additionally, Argosy University allowed me the opportunity to be a teaching assistant, learning skills of working with students and teaching—which I utilize today working in the practice with our students. [I also gained] an incredible work ethic,” she said.

Hammond believes that earning a Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology provided the foundation needed to make a difference in her clients’ lives. “I was very motivated by the Argosy University faculty and staff when I attended,” she said. “I found the faculty and staff to be really supportive and encouraging of my endeavors.” Hammond stated that the biggest challenge she faced while in school was balancing her jobs, practica and academic work load. But these challenges taught her valuable time management skills that she utilizes in her daily life.

She recommends that current students research an area of interest and gather the resources to achieve goals. “If you are interested in private practice, be sure to do your homework and gather the business knowledge and resources necessary to have a successful practice,” she said. “Get involved with state and national associations related to your career interest and network with others. It's never too early to start gathering information for your future.”

Her accomplishments include publishing "The Practical Guide to Raising Emotionally Healthy Children" (2016) and earning the following awards: “What a Woman” from the Florida Psychological Association (2014), “Up and Comers” from the Tampa Bay Business Journal (2015), “Early Career Achievement” from the American Psychological Association (2015) and the “I AM L.E.E.” award (2017). Hammond is the 2017 president of the Florida Psychological Association and serves on the board of directors for the Ryan Nece Foundation. Her practice supports Joshua House and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
