Dr. Franco states that, “the two most powerful things to say to your child are ‘You make me happy’ and ‘I love spending time with you.’ These statements carry powerful messages to the child because they convey unconditional love. The statements become part of, and help shape, how a child defines him/herself. Allowing a child to embrace all aspects of her/himself is extremely empowering and will carry them through the many travails that life offers. The way a child perceives him/herself has become the template on how the world is viewed.
As an adult, the choices one makes (especially in the romantic arena) will be parallel to the internal beliefs one has about the self, and these beliefs positively correlate with the messages one has learned and absorbed in childhood. The psychological impact of saying to your child ‘I love being with you, I love hanging out with you, I love spending time with you, I trust you, and you make me happy,’ will all support their feeling of being loved and valued throughout their life.”
