2013, Master of Arts, Community Counseling, Argosy University, Schaumburg
Jennifer Zielinksi understands what it means to participate in a group therapy session with teens. In high school, she was dealing with family issues including an alcoholic parent. She felt alone and misunderstood. Then she saw a poster in her high school—a poster for a therapy group of kids who were experiencing issues at home. She joined the group and started her path toward working as a community counselor.
Jennifer recently returned to her high school to talk with students and visit the location that started her path toward working as a counselor. Today, Jennifer counsels adolescents and young adults, helping them work through issues. She utilizes group therapy, which she understands is a motivator for teens. While they may not feel comfortable opening up to Jennifer alone, she says that the group setting makes them feel comfortable. “When one of their peers tells them [that they are dealing with similar issues,] they’re learning and they’re becoming self aware.”
Jennifer, who in 2013 earned a Master of Arts in Community Counseling from Argosy University, Schaumburg, says that she was inspired hearing the students speak at her high school. She says that she’s focused on helping others and that “if she comes up with a goal, she knows she is going to make it work.” While she didn’t know much about the field of counseling when she started school, her education at Argosy University provided the knowledge she needed to make a difference in her community. “To see the path that I’ve chosen is something I am really proud of. My hard work is paying off.”
