2003, Master of Arts, Clinical Psychology, Arizona School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University
Jennifer Larson’s path to psychology began as a childhood interest that fully developed during her undergraduate years. While in college, a friend urged Jennifer to take an introduction to psychology course. She took the class—and immediately realized that her childhood interest had turned into a lifelong interest. She ended up double majoring in psychology and sociology.
Jennifer explains that during her undergraduate studies, she had numerous female mentors who opened doors and provided opportunities for her professional growth. She built upon her education by working at University of Wisconsin Psychiatric Institute in Madison, Wisconsin, and later enrolled in the Clinical Psychology program at the Arizona School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University.
Today, Jennifer is the President of Concentric Counseling & Consulting, a private practice group located in downtown Chicago. “I oversee the group practice, provide supervision and consultation to my employees, and provide individual and couples psychotherapy,” she says. She’s recently begun sharing her work via social media and blogging. “I enjoy networking and cultivating and maintaining partnerships and relationships within the community.”
Jennifer chose to attend the Arizona School of Professional Psychology at Argosy University because a friend told her about the program. She graduated in 2003 with Master of Arts in Clinical Psychology. “I visited the school and reviewed the programs and its respective curriculum. I learned very quickly that [the program] fit better with my academic and career interests and passions than [other programs I’d looked at]. Also, as a working adult, it fit my scheduling needs as well.”
She adds that her instructors were instrumental in helping her to understand the different options within the industry, assisting her as she chose a career path. “I enjoyed my coursework and found myself truly passionate and interested in my education. My practicum experience undoubtedly provided me 'real-life' work experiences that have and continue to shape the work that I do.”
Now that she’s established her practice, Jennifer is giving back to the community. “We kicked off the 2015-2016 school year by announcing that Concentric Counseling & Consulting will donate counseling and teacher support services directly to students and teachers at a neighborhood Chicago Public School (CPS).” In addition to this project, Jennifer is a member of National Board of Certified Counselors, Illinois Counseling Association, and Neighborhood Parent Network. “I volunteer my time coordinating counseling and teacher support services to a neighborhood Chicago Public School (CPS). I am also a volunteer member of my son's school PTA Fundraising Committee, and a Board member of my neighborhood community association.”
Jennifer recommends that current students stay focused on their goals. “Don’t lose sight of them during times that are difficult and trying. There may be times when you doubt yourself and want to give up. Be kind to yourself during those times. Don't let yourself get in the way of you.” She is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) & National Certified Counselor (NCC).
