Who is the Typical Online Student?

We all know why people choose an online education at Argosy University, Online Programs. It’s convenient—you can take classes when it fits into your schedule—allowing for a balance between family, work, school, and life. And it provides an opportunity to connect with other students from virtually anywhere.

So who are the people you may be studying alongside in your online classes? That question is becoming more difficult to answer, now that more people are choosing to pursue online education. The characteristics of online students are growing over time.

According to BestColleges.com, which conducted a survey of online learners, the number of 18-24 year old students taking online courses has increased to 34% of the student population. Just four years ago, this group comprised only a quarter of the online student body.

Additionally, 61% of students are enrolled full time and 52% choose an online program offered by a school located more than 50 miles from their home. EdTechMagazine.com adds that 80% of students live within 100 miles of a “ground” campus affiliated with their online school.

EdTechMagazine also found that over 1/3 of online students are the first in their family to attend college and 33% of online students are enrolled in business courses. And while a majority of students pursuing online education are under the age of 29, 49% of the online student body is made up of people ages 30-49.

So who might your classmates be? A diverse group of people all of whom are in the online classroom to build their knowledge, balance their lives, move up the ladder—and maybe make some friends and professional connections along the way.
